Lettering style is part of the design, not a setting you adjust at checkout. The Old English pendant is always Old English; the Arabic pendant is always Arabic calligraphy. Pick the design whose lettering you want, and that is the lettering that gets cut.

What These Necklaces Are Made From

Plenty of listings never name the metal at all — silver-tone, silver color, or nothing whatsoever. Those words describe a surface, not a material, which is why two pendants that look alike in photos can differ completely.

Nine of the 11 designs here are 925 sterling silver, and their product pages state it in the specifications. The birthstone nameplate is copper-based. The two-layer birthstone set carries a Material field that lets you choose Sterling Silver or Copper yourself, so the base metal there is your call rather than a mystery. Finish is a separate question from base metal, and the two get confused constantly. The Color field on every product page offers the same three finishes: gold, rose gold and silver — a plated surface over the base metal underneath, which is why one design costs the same in all three. How Made-to-Order Engraving Works

Each design has a fixed number of name fields and a fixed character limit per field, because the lettering has to physically fit the pendant. The field stops accepting characters at the limit, so it is not possible to order a name the pendant cannot hold. We engrave exactly the characters you enter — capitals, lowercase and accented letters such as é, ñ and ü all come through as typed.

Read it as a shortlist tool. An eleven-letter name only fits the birthstone nameplate at 16 characters; four children only fit the interlinked hearts. Where a field is optional, leaving it empty is fine — a two-name family tree is made as a two-name piece, not one with a gap.

Wearing and Layering Nameplates

Nameplate pendants sit best just below the collarbone, where the lettering stays readable at conversational distance. Most designs come on a fixed chain whose length is stated on the product page; the interlinked family heart is the one that lets you choose, offering 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22 inches (35.56 to 55.88 cm). Sixteen and eighteen are the usual adult picks; fourteen suits a child.

Keeping Engraving Crisp

Engraved lettering is recessed into the metal rather than printed on top, so it does not rub away with normal wear. Sterling silver darkens as it reacts with air and skin, which is ordinary and reversible: a soft polishing cloth brings it back, and a dry pouch between wears slows it considerably.

Copper darkens faster, and some people prefer that patina in the recesses because it makes the name easier to read. Plated finishes ask for a lighter touch — keep gold and rose gold away from perfume, hairspray, chlorine and household cleaners.
